Show your community that animal welfare is YOUR business.

Best Management Practices for Pet Retailing provides guidance for everyone in the pet industry who has the privilege of caring for our animals.

Best Management Practices for Pet Retailing provides guidance for everyone in the pet industry who has the privilege of caring for our animals. The objective of the program is twofold. Supporting pet stores in their day-to-day operations and educating consumers on care practices, setting the stage for important conversations. Companies that have chosen to participate in the BMP program use it as a tool to demonstrate to the general community their sanitary practices and dedication to animal care.

How the program works

Participants can access the program and make use of best management practices in their workplace. They sign a letter of attestation stating that they voluntarily adhere to the practices outlined in the program and then they receive resources that they can use in-store to promote their animal care practices to their community. Resources include a pledge certificate and a sticker for in-store use.

Program Membership

A very interesting aspect of this program is that the information is accessible to everyone. Communities want transparency, especially about how animals are cared for. Responsible pet businesses follow these basic guidelines in their day-to-day operations. If a member of the public has a question, they can also consult the guidelines provided by the participating business and Pets Canada. The responsibility is that of the operator since it is the one who certifies best practices. If serious concerns arise regarding animal welfare in a business context, the issues are addressed through the appropriate authorities in the affected area such as the SPCA or municipal police.
